Measuring T1ρ Changes Related to Acidosis and Alkalosis

چکیده
Introduction While the brain maintains a constant pH level globally, local variations in pH may play a significant role in brain function. The ability to image pH dynamics could offer a novel, more direct approach to map brain function as well as detect disease and assess treatment response. In this study, we evaluated the utility of an MR imaging technique known as T1ρ, T1 relaxation in the rotating frame, to measures pH dynamics. The sensitivity of T1ρ to changes in pH was evaluated in both phantoms and an in vivo mouse model using a set of pharmacological challenges. Real-time fiber optic monitoring of pH was employed throughout the in vivo imaging experiment.

VARIATIONS OF GLUCOSE 6-PHOSPHATE DEHYDROGENASE ACTIVITY IN VARIOUS TISSUES INDUCED BY METABOLIC ALKALOSIS, ACIDOSIS AND DIABETES
The effects of chronic metabolic acidosis, alkalosis and alloxan-induced ketoacidosis on G6PD activity of rat kidney, liver and erythrocytes were studied. Metabolic acidosis significantly increased the activity of kidney enzyme (55%) but decreased the liver (43%) and erythrocyte (38%) enzyme activities. Alkalosis did not make a significant change in the kidney or liver enzyme activity but ...

متن کاملThe Frequency of the Causes of Acid Base Disturbances in Patients Hospitalized in the Toxicology Ward of Baharloo Hospital in 2009
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of arterial blood gases (ABGs) in determining the type of intoxication. Methods: Medical charts of all patients who had referred to the toxicology ward of Baharloo Hospital between January 2009 and December 2009 were evaluated. After excluding the patients with multi-drug toxicity, data, including age, sex, type of intoxication ...
متن کاملCortical GABAergic neurons are more severely impaired by alkalosis than acidosis
BACKGROUND Acid-base imbalance in various metabolic disturbances leads to human brain dysfunction. Compared with acidosis, the patients suffered from alkalosis demonstrate more severe neurological signs that are difficultly corrected. We hypothesize a causative process that the nerve cells in the brain are more vulnerable to alkalosis than acidosis. METHODS The vulnerability of GABAergic neur...
متن کاملCompensatory Hypoventilation in Metabolic 296 JAVAHERI
Although hyperventilation is a well-known compensatory mechanism in metabolic acidosis, compensatory hypoventilation has been inconsistent and confroversial in metabolic alkalosis. Six healthy subjects were studied under baseline conditions and during steady-state metabolic acidosis (seven episodes) and alkalosis (14 episodes). Minute ventilation (yE) fell in metabolic alkalosis and rose in met...
